Legends 5th Annual Fall Golf Classic

September 29, 2001

  at OLD OAK Golf Club

The 2001 Legends Fall Golf Outing Classic kicked off with the annual pre-golf breakfast at the Purple Onion. Favorite menu selections were the skillet breakfasts and the strawberry pancakes. Breakfast participants at table 1 were, Diane, Lynn, Dawn, JoAnn, Frank, Carol, and April arrived later. Table number 2 (a window booth) featured the likes of Ken Kv, Bob Kv, Mike B., and Nick arrived later.

A short trip from the breakfast venue to the west put all at the front door of Old Oaks Country Club in Homer Township. From this point, all except Diane checked in for golf. Diane went shopping.

11:30 was the first tee time. Tee-off this day was from number 10. The tournament director distributed the 4 foot string and cutter packages to each team leader. Team tee-off assignments were altered several times due to the arrival of Kevin N. later than the scheduled time. Gary M. on the other hand had arrived 2 to 3 minutes earlier than the assigned time.

Team number 1 (pink string) consisted of Ken and Bob Kv., Frank and Gary D. The 4 ball scramble format from the blue tees this day played at 6241 yards. Comments from the gallery regarding the quality of the first groups tee shots ranged from "I thought he was better than that" to "where were they aiming?". Evidently at this point, Lynn had removed his putter from his bag, and left it on number 10. This was described later as a senior moment.

The second group, Ed and Joe V ,continuing the relative theme, with the yellow string teamed up with Gary M, and Lynn. Number 10 is a severe dog leg left 426 yard par 4 hole. Gary M went straight for the hole, while Joe tried to hit his shot towards his car in order to retrieve the cooler with the beer in it.

This plan worked well until Beth arrived. Beth supplied ice for Joe's cooler and had achieved a solid customer base by allowing Joe's beer to continue in play.

Group 1's play was stalled at the tenth green. Group 2 was in the tenth fairway as team 3, JoAnn, Carol, Dawn and April prepared for their tee shots from the red tees with their orange string.

After Kevin N arrived the 4th group with Mike B, Mike B II, Nick and Kevin N teed off with the gold string.

At this point, only occasional sightings were made of the 4th team while they spent most of their time in the woods.

On the second green the discovery was made that Lynn's putter was missing. None of the groups following group 1 had picked up the putter. Nick had a spare and let Lynn use it.

Summarizing the comments from each group as they arrived at the finishing hole number 9:

Group 1 comments: referring to Group 2,

"how many times did you guys throw the ball?"

Group 2 comments:

"Joe, you are a god", "Ed you are a god", "Gary you are and animal", "Lynn, how did you do that?"

Group 3 comments: referring to group 2,

"why were you guys throwing the ball?", and "was Beth hitting on you guys too?"

Group 4 comments:

"asking the other three groups, "Were the fairways in good shape?"

It had been a beautiful day with many a fine shot being made.

Scores were calculated using the base 10 format.

    Team 1 68

    Team 2 67

    Team 3 DQ

    Team 4 75

Team 3 was disqualified since they were playing their own game. I can't quite explain what they were doing with their string either. The commissioner issued a warning so they are on probation for next years fall classic.

Dawn drew the number 20 from the hat to determine closest to the string winner.

Final string lengths submitted:

Team 1 4 inches

Team 2 12 inches

Team 3 DQ

Team 4 32 inches.

Team 2 was the big winner of the day capturing both low net, and closest to the string.

At this point, Lynn's MacGreggar putter was found with the proshop staff. Someone had turned it in from the 10th tee where evidently he had left it when he first arrived.
